The CFC Calgary Flyers Running Club

Calgary Flyers” was formed in summer 2007, by a bunch of enthusiastic, but by no means elite runners, who were CFC members and families/friends of members, to train for the Rocky Mountain Half-Marathon, that was held at Canmore last September.  Although some of the team had previously competed at that distance and beyond, for others it was the first time they had ever run an endurance event.  It was a fantastic day and all of our team completed the course in fine style, achieving personal goals that had them grinning from ear to ear.

Since then some members have taken part in other events (e.g. Okanagan Marathon), while the rest have eased into winter hibernation, with the occasional gym or treadmill session.  So we’re not superfit elites who run 20km before breakfast every day (well, not every day!); we’re just ordinary folks trying to stay fit to fly and enjoy life.

This year we’ll be flying the CFC flag again at a number of running events – well, not actually the flag, more the logo on our T-shirts.  We’ll also be arranging training runs of various distances/paces to suit all levels of runner.  Information on upcoming events involving “Flyers” will be posted on the board in Dispatch and will appear on this website.

Why not join us?  Partners, family and friends are also very welcome.  For more information contact either John Thorpe or Linda Andersen.

Flyer's Email Update May 1, 2008

Hi Flyers!

Yes, I know this is Calgary and we could get snow in July, but we've finally had some rain, so maybe we can pretend Spring is really here!  The forecast for Sunday is light rain and moderate temperatures, so reasonable for running, so are you going to get out there and join our Sunday morning training run?

Let's meet at Edworthy parking lot, as usual, ready to run at 9 a.m.  Please get back to me if you plan to join us (so we don't depart without you) and let me know your intended distance.

By the way, please join me in congratulating Lorraine on a Personal Best in last weekend's Calgary Police Half - well done Lorraine!  Linda would have been in that event too, but had to return to Saskatoon on family matters.  She ran the distance anyway from her mother's place, at the same time as the race was running, so well done to Linda for her commitment.  Jenny and I would have also done the Police Half, but she was in the UK (but competed in a triathlon there instead!) and my knee injury prevented me from taking part.  I was there with you in spirit Lorraine!  Hopefully, I'll be able to return to Sunday run training this weekend.

Please welcome new Flyer, Michael Ervin, an experienced marathoner, who will be joining our group soon.  He's away competing in the Vancouver Marathon this weekend. Have a great race Michael and we look forward to meeting you and hearing all about the race soon.

See you all Sunday?

John

If God invented marathons to keep people from doing anything more stupid, the triathlon must have taken Him completely by surprise.  ~P.Z. Pearce

Still not sure if running is for you?  Well, bear in mind that there are two types of people: those who run, and those who should!
